Unique Adjectives that Start with ‘L’, Definitions, and Usage in Sentences

Of course, one cannot cover all the adjectives that start with L in an article. For that, you will have to pick up the dictionary. However, in the following list, you’ll get a good idea of the types of adjectives you might encounter while reading and how to incorporate them in your speech and writing.

1: Laughing

Definition: amusing or full of happiness

Example: His laughing black eyes made him the center of attention in the party.

Note: The word “laughing” is generally used as a verb. But sometimes, it’s also used as an adjective to describe someone’s eyes.

2: Loyal

Definition: Unchanging in belief, friendship, support. Could be for a person or a group of people or even principles or an organization

Example: Ned Stark was loyal man to his very end.

Note: This adjective is descriptive of a person. It tells you about their very nature. It can also be categorized as an attributive adjective (adjectives that appear right after or before a noun or pronoun). It’s a rather simple adjective that is quite common in English Language.

3: Lucky

Definition: associated with good luck. Someone who always seem to have luck on their side or something that brings good luck. Can be used for any noun or pronoun.

Example: This lucky pendant was gifted to me by my uncle.

Note: Another very common descriptive adjective.

4: Loud-mouthed

Definition: Used for a person who talks too much at inappropriate times or in an offensive or stupid manner. Also used for people who are too loud when they talk.

Example: I really don’t want to bring Jacob to the party because he’s a loudmouth and he’ll embarrass us all.

Note: This adjective is a Compound adjective as it is made up of two separate words and forms an entirely different word. Any adjective that has a hyphen in it can be categorized as a compound adjective. Although, it’s not necessary that a compound adjective must always be connected with a hyphen – This adjective can also be written as “loudmouthed”.

5: Latvian

Definition: Relating to the nation of Latvia or its language

Example: Our Latvian professor told us all about Latvia’s culture and history.

Note: This is a Proper Adjective. A proper adjective is derived from a proper noun. The adjective “Latvian” is derived from the proper noun “Latvia”. Other examples of proper adjectives are – Lincolnesque, Kafkaesque, British, Indian, Fenian, etc.

6: Living

Definition: Full of life or alive

Example: It’s a living spectacle of madness and divergence.

Note: This is a Participial Adjective. Every adjective that ends with -ing or -ed can be categorized as Participial Adjective.

7: Limited

Definition: Small. Few or controlled in number.

Example: The offer is valid for only a limited period of time.

Note: As English grammar would have it, the word “Limited” can be categorized as a limiting adjective. A limiting adjective restricts a noun or a pronoun. To help you understand, here is another example: Very few chickens that crossed the road.

The adjective “few” doesn’t tell you anything about the chickens. It doesn’t describe them. It only restricts the noun that is chickens.

8: Large

Definition: Big in size or number. Exceeding other things or having more space, scope or capacity than usual.

Example: A large meteor was spotted heading towards Earth by NASA yesterday.

Note: This can be categorized as a descriptive adjective. It is also an attributive adjective as it comes right before the noun in the example sentence above. It is important to understand that categories of adjectives are constructed to help new learners of the English language grasp it quickly. Therefore, certain adjective types can overlap with each other.

9: Loony

Definition: Crazy or used for someone who is unconventional in their behavior.

Example: It’s best to stay away from Luna because she is loony.

Note: A personality adjective – i.e., this adjective is often used to describe an individual’s personality.

10: Lovelier

Definition: more beautiful, graceful or lovable.

Example: Dogs are way lovelier than cats in my opinion.

Note: Comparative Adjective. If you look closely at this adjective, you’ll find that it compares two different subjects or objects. The presence of the suffix “-er” is evidence for that fact. Any adjective that seems to compare two nouns or pronouns can be categorized as a comparative adjective. More examples include livelier, better, more handsome, etc.
